Mobile Accessibility Options – Android

We wrap up the year with a few built-in and 3rd party accessibility options for Android.

Settings > System > Accessibility > Vision, Hearing, Motor & Cognition

  • TalkBack (screen reader)
  • Message/call voice notifications
  • Screen shade
  • Font Size
  • Touch zoom
  • Screen color inversion
  • Screen color adjustment
  • Captions
  • Flash alerts
  • Audio type
  • Sound balance
  • Touch feedback time
  • Touch assistant
  • Screen timeout
  • Touch control areas
  • Touch Zoom

Other options:

  • Haptic feedback (Settings > Sound & notification > Advanced Settings > Vibrate on tap
  • Google Assistant
  • Voice Control/Information (depends on your device and apps)
  • Voice Search
  • Text-to-speech output (Settings > Personal > Language & keyboard > Speech): Adjust Preferred Engine, Rate, and Pitch.
  • Keyboards (Settings > Personal > Language & keyboard > Keyboard & input methods): The Play Store offers a variety of different keyboard apps which may provide a better experience for some users.  Remember that you are not limited to your default keyboard. And, sometimes typing is easier on an actual keyboard, so check out physical Bluetooth keyboard options available for Android and/or iOS devices.

A host of other 3rd party accessibility apps are also available. Some are free, some charge a fee. Reviews may help you decide, or you may try a few out on your own.
